Interesting, my comrades at Brookhaven Nat Lab in NY do this with new Burle 7835 triodes. They detune the PA output, and run the tube off resonance. They then drive them to get the dissipation at 100

That would work fine with ham tubes like 3-500Z's or other tubes with the gettering material coated on the anodes. It would be an excellent idea on tubes that have been in storage a while. Most of t

The reasons for observing low gas currents if you delay more than a few seconds after the event have been explained many times - "it's the gettering action". Does testing 3-500Zs cause amnesia? 73 fr

Not only that Ian, 8000 volts is FAR too low for breakdown in a 3- 500Z. Normal peak voltages almost reach that amount, and any overdriven or under-loaded operating conditions, even if a transient c

If there is a chemically active surface (hot anode), gettering in a tube the size of a 3-500Z occurs on a timescale of seconds. It only takes a very small release of trapped gas impurities to trigger
