Ok.. yea i did search some on reducing the voltage at the heaters on google ... yikes alot of what in not really looking for.So a quick question .. what is the favored way to reduce the voltage ?? i

A small variac off the power line into the filament transformer? May cost as much as $50, but that's cheap compared to a pair of 3-500Z. You could stick an AC voltmeter across the filaments, too, and

Hi Mike I think all the wire sizes you mentioned are too large, and the resistor might be right on the edge dissipation wise. I just went through this, and reduced the filament voltage on my Henry 3K

Just coil up some #10 magnet wire and put in series with the xfmr end of the filament choke, it wont take much. #12 will get pretty warm and can be used if there is air flow. You dont want to use cop

No, you want to drop it by 2 Volts. With 1 Volt, you are still 10% high. That's way too much! To destroy 2 Volts at 15 Amps so you need a resistance of 0.133 Ohms in series with the filaments. The re

Using small wire will eventually anneal it and change the resistance during the process. Better to use the proper size. And its 30A, not 15 for 2 tubes. Carl KM1H ____________________________________

Yeah, you are right about the 30A for 2 tubes but this fellow mentioned that he measured 12V across the filaments so I assumed he was running them in series which gets us back to the 15A value. 73, A

Put the resistor in the primary of the filament transformer. This gives you a free step-start; the in-rush current will be reduced. Get a 25 ohm 50 watt resistor with a slider to adjust the voltage.

Yep, the resistor in the primary is the ideal way to go. I have a fixed value 22 Ohm resistor in my 3-500 amp and as Phil says, it doubles as a soft start. Alek, VK6APK PS: Mike, I just looked you up
