Interestingly, the forerunner of the ARRL DX, the "International Relay Contest" of 1927 not only involved pre-registration, but the ARRL gave you a unique exchange! The contest in those days did last

NOT QUITE! What is paperwork? If you send cards to ARRL HQ, you do not need to enter QSO data on your application. The data is entered directly from the cards. THEREFORE, you MUST indicate ON THE CAR
