Interesting point Paul. I have used the /W4 suffix previously in WPX contests and the W4 has always counted as the prefix to the best of my knowledge. I just tested this in Writelog and when used as

That's correct but the rules also say... "The portable prefix must be an authorized prefix of the country/call area of operation. " So that would permit NV4 to be used as a prefix in W4 land. However

I agree. It's not uncommon to be called by a U.S. station when running below 14150. My responsibility is to be sure I am operating within the bounds of my license not to check whether anyone else is.
