Steve: I don't know the source of your information that tuning from the top down is better for USB and the reverse on LSB. Maybe my ears are different from that person's, but I think it is much easie

i made an error that i didn't catch until re-reading the post. USB should be tuned from the bottom and LSB from the top. i fix computers all day and USB is etched in my brain. sorry for the error. -

In the same manner, I like to tune into a CW signal by hearing the pitch drop as I tune into it. My TS-850SAT has the "CW-R" feature that reverses the sideband on CW. So I usually start off doing S&P

Jim: To carry out your suggestion, I'd suggest start at some frequency near the top of the band and tune up until you run out; then start 100 khz lower and tune until you hit the place you first star
