Yep, the switching power supply was replaced. Been almost a year now and no problems have returned and the rfi was gone too. Must have been a change in the board versions is my guess. While we are on

Why? There is a small opening to detect smoke. Simply shielding the remaining unit certainly doesn't void any "warranty". It may or may not be the solution but certainly a try. I never heard of this
