I am running an FT1000MP Mk5 at 40w output during rtty contests and the fan runs almost constantly and it gets hot. My understanding of the MP manual is that I can run it at 100w out for long periods

Jim, The guidance is simple. Normally you can run any Icom at 100% nominal output power and any Yaesu at 50% output power on RTTY. That's it... I used to have an IC-756 and sometimes used it for Low

In my station, for RTTY contesting (and for eveything else) I run a Yaesu FT-920. I checked the manual under Data operations and there is nothing in there that says to limit the output power for 100%

Hi Jim, I assume your MkV is a "Field". I have the original MP and have been running it in RTTY contests for years set to approx. 75W out. Yes, the fan comes on quite soon and stays on most of the ti

I'm running the Mark V (not Field) and generally operate at 100 watts when running in a contest. Even at that level the cooling fan cycles on and off suggesting that it is not operating too hot. The

IC-7400 (UK/EU) == IC-746Pro (NA), IIRC. I run mine at full power and haven't had any issues. But then I'm mostly an S&P operator and don't get much opportunities to run. -- 73, Peter Laws N5UWY/9 WA
