While operating the FL QSO Party this weekend I noticed that the use of ALT-L to check previous QSOs with a particular station did not give the most recent QSO. Can anyone explain why this happens ?

Alt-l will not search the most recent five QSOs in the edit window, because those five QSOs have not yet been written to the .dat log file. I've never had a problem with it finding some log entries,
