- Yes, a USB to serial converter will work fine if you can find a good one. About half of them are good and the other have seem to have software driver bugs that prevent them from working well at 57600

- The 280 does run hot at 10 amps. I find it is a goos supply but about 18 amps is all it can run very well. It does have over voltage protection. It will run an Orion but only at reduced output power
