I too tried my old Autek QF-1A on the Orion II. It was mandatory on my old Kenwood. However it did not seem to really help with the Orion. I do feel some audio filtering would help but I am hesistant

I have Orion II with 2.030. No white dot but yes I drop characters on SEND1, 2 and 3. It is intermittent and I never know when its going to happen. Seems like the send buttons don't have a high enoug

I would speculate that they either found a cable vendor that made the cable that way or they are trying to use the cable for several different rigs/applcations. It's your rig and you do what you want

What frequency instability problem are you referring to. My unit does not drift. My old Kenwood TS-520S would drift 200 Hz for the first three hours, that was drift. This thing seems solid. 73, John
