Jack is correct the Orion AUX jack has output that can be used for AFSK .  FSK on the other hand is more of an issue.  If your friend is using the Ten-Tec AUX cable for FSK I'm afraid he's out of luc

I'd suggest you look at:     http://n6ie.com/A9_Fix.html The symptoms suggest the A9 board electrolytic capacitor failure.  An easy and inexpensive fix.  At a minimum, go for 105C rated capacitors.
