Tom, Way back in the '90s, when I served on the SAE automotive RF immunity and emissions (EMI & EMR) committees, questions about why we have negative-lead fuses in ham radio gear came up from time to
Same conclusions here in central Texas. Lots of stations, but most were barely readable. I didn't hear any EU or Asian DX, partly because my Beverage was down and partly (mostly) because, although th
Bill, When I loaded my 100 ft. stick of 25G, I had broken up the guys with insulators. To see what effect connecting the top guys to the tower would have, I jumpered the first insulators on all three
Lee, No one's mentioned the "Spotlight" phenomenon, which occasionally happens on 160. The signal comes shining down from the "upper layers" and illuminates a very small area. Stations lucky enough t
Douglas, You certainly can use the galvanized roof as a ground screen. It might be a good idea to measure resistance between sheets to get an idea of how well they're all tied together electrically.
Same here in central Texas. I can hear the pileups, but I haven't heard the guys on Heard. 73, Brad KV5V _________________ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
Bill, I've never seen any hard data showing that coax should be installed one way or the other. I can only report that many years ago a professional antenna engineer (and ham buddy) in Dallas strongl
Paul, Loading the coax with ferrites might make a difference, but I don't think that's a good way to address the problem. If there's RF in the shack, that probably means it's being reflected from the
Roger, A big front went through central Texas today, leaving us with 20-40 dB over S9 QRN. Parts of the area got 12 cm of rain, and the front extended all the way up to VE3-land. As always, we needed
FWIW, I'll be listening and calling tonight. Just fixed an intermittent problem with the TX antenna and, last week, laid a BOG for EU. CU tonight. Brad, KV5V Texas, USA _________________ Searchable A
Mark, I didn't see any mention of a preamp. Signals from a good Beverage are typically 20-30 dB below what you'd hear from a dipole or a vertical. Everything else you've done looks good. Keep it up!
Phil, I've turned off updates for the maximum allowed 35 days on Pat's and my computers but not on my new laptop. I use it occasionally to access my Flex, so it will be my "canary in the coal mine" f
Helpful comments, Rick, and thanks to Floyd too. My XYL's computer never has to run Flex software, but all of mine do. So I'll keep the canary for the time being. My friend's computer doesn't run Fle
Hi Roger, I'd hoped to be able to chat this evening, but the QRN is 10 to 20 dB over S9 now. The receive antenna isn't available yet, so I can only listen on the inverted-V TX antenna. But I doubt th
