When a top hat becomes a "middle hat", it just makes the center of the antenna look fatter, which is bad for the current distribution. If you add the whip, lose the hat. Rick N6RK __________________

No it won't. You need to use the horizontal antenna as a receive antenna and the inverted L as a transmit antenna. If your rig doesn't have an RX antenna input, add an external relay. Rick N6RK ____

Yes, I have tried that. I used some transformers from Mini-Circuits that acted as baluns and impedance transformers. This is extremely important, or else the feedline will act as a vertical antenna.
