I have a 70' inverted-L that tunes up nicely on 160 meters with a series capacitor. Values found empirically are 218pf @ 1.8, 152pf @ 1.9, and 105pf @ 2.0. For testing I used some 600V micas I had on

Steve: I use a largish air variable capacitor to feed my inverted L on 160M. Not sure of the actual cap value, but it's a lot easier to tune using this than a boxful of fixed values. Plus the air var

When I said 70' that was a typo, and may have caused some confusion. I meant to say 170 feet. I have a 25' wooden pole at the back of the house. 10 AWG stranded, insulated wire goes 25' up the pole o

Hi Steve and all .... Be gentle with me as I am not a "builder." Help me understand this. What is a "largish air variable capacitor" and where do I get one? How much? What is the capacitance range th

Bruce: I think the term "Largish" is mine. By that I mean an air variable capacitor that looks like it came from a linear amp or high-power tuner. Usually these kinds of caps are more than two or thr

your Inverted-L. You said 70' ..... is this total length (vertical + horizontal), or just the vertical portion? If the total length is 70' then you will indeed need some additional matching somewher

I side with Wes N5WA on this issue - direct coax feed does the trick. Adding reactances along the way just complicates everything, and further limits the utility of the antenna. Using direct feed on
