Has anyone discovered a reliable scheme for remote adjustment of vacuum variables? I have two antennas with vacuum variables at the base and would very much like to tweak them from the shack. I'd nee

I second Chuck's recommendation below. Last Friday I installed 8 new SS pulleys in my fir trees after the Home Depot pulleys failed after two years. Of the 8 pulleys I removed, 4 had deteriorated to

Date: Tue, 03 Sep 2002 21:01:03 -0700
I recall the old ARRL Handbooks of the mid to late 1960's featured a 60 foot tilt over mast constructed of well casing. If I recall the pictures correctly, it supported a 3 element trapped tri-bander

I am rebuilding a Hy-Tower and want to replace the reportedly inadequate top insulator sleeves with Teflon. This has been reported as a good solution to prevent arcing across the insulators on 160M.

There's a saying in mountain climbing (and other areas too) that it's the "little stuff that will kill you". I lost a friend on a climb several years ago when he tripped over his loose boot lace and

Hi Tom, I've never had much luck with soldering guns for PL259's. Others might, but for me there's simply not enough tip mass to keep temperatures where they should be. After 25 years + of struggling

The recent thread regarding Hy Gain Hy-Towers brought back memories of when I acquired a used Hy-Tower and wanted to made modifications to optimize the antenna for 80, 40 and 30M operation. One of th

Hi Steve - I'd recommend the wire equivlent of a fuse. Where the open wire line terminates to the through-window arrangement, reduce the wire size to something smaller, say 18g if that worked for you

I installed a longer and more robust stinger for an old HyGain Hy-Tower that would work well for a 40M vertical if you wanted to avoid guy lines. It cost around $200 in aluminum from Texas Towers. An

Thanks Rich, When the line breaks, the weight will travel quite some distance. I recall trying to get on the air when living in an apartment in the early 1970's. It had to be a stealthy job requiring
