A couple of times in my life I have been in a building during a lightning storm, as today, and I hear a "zap" arc-type noise during a close strike. Today I was in a garage during a storm and we had a

You are hearing the original lightning protector... the gap between wires in typical electrical outlets, lamp sockets, switches, etc is so small that they will arc over at just a couple thousand volt

Last year I experienced a lightning-induced pulse in a very close-up and personal way. Was tinkering with an antenna fed with ladder line. In the shack I was holding the (stripped) ends of the line i

At my QTH, Dave's response arrived before the original post to which he was replying. Maybe ESP? Bob - W3YY _______________________________________________ ___________________________________________

Interesting. Dave's response to this turned up 7 minutes before this original post. Around here I normally hear them as a "pop", or snap. Lightning a mile away can induce as much as a 1000 volts per

It is the result of differing routing of the messages. Email travels at nearly the speed of light, but sometimes arrives by way of Pluto. 73 de WOØW ___________________________________________

You are hearing induced voltage arcing to a ground or perhaps differentially across the power line across the closest spacing in the wiring due to a much larger CURRENT produced in the lightening arc

Hi all, I've experienced something similar, 'cept it was winter, heavy blowing snow (20-30 mph winds). I went to connect an inverted L and happened to brush the feed line past the ground bar on the w

This is actually a very different phenomena from the induced charge from a local lightening strike. Charge build up due to wind and sand are due to electrostatic charge transfer identical to the "Van

Thanks, everyone, for your "enlightning" comments on the matter. I figured the noise was due to induced voltages on something, probably the wiring, but I never figured it would be that great to gener
