An oily rag isn't what's recommended by cable manufacturers. You want something fairly light that'll soak into the strands without leaving a coating on the outside that'll attract grit and other airb

I use Pre-Lube 6 on the winch of a US Tower. The lube does not attract foreign material and lubes the inner strands as well. The lube is in a spray can and easy to apply. I believe the military uses
