I would not use it for mast material. You want something like high carbon steel or 6061-T6 aluminum. Steel is about twice as strong as aluminum in the same OD size and wall thickness, so it is the be

I'm not so sure I'd worry about the rust, but steam pipe is probably cast and it's probably much more ductile (bends easily for a given size) that the alloys we'd want to use for masting. Also, if it

Steam pipe has lots of good uses but I don't think you will find it any good for your plans. The weight of the stuff is about one and a half times the weight of a normal pipe the same size. You said
