Gang After some serious tree trimming, I now have room to fit a full sized wire antenna where my G5RV is right now. I am thinking about a 135' open wire fed dipole, as multi bands are needed. Questio

Others may disagree, but I think it's worth doing just for the data. I've been pleasantly surprised in the past by things that I didn't think were going to work at all. You won't lose a lot of signal

A quick check with EZNEC shows the following loss in the 30 feet of RG213. The antenna was placed at 40 feet. 3.5 MHz 2.17 dB 7 MHz 1.95 dB 10.1 MHz 4.42 dB 14 MHz 6.5 dB 18.1 MHz 2.28 dB 21 MHz 3.1

6.5 sounds pretty high. What kind of match/mismatch are you giving him? With or without a balun. Roger (K8RI - ARRL Life Member) www.rogerhalstead.com N833R (World's oldest Debonair) ________________

That's what I was thinking, too. RG-213 is only supposed to have something like less than a dB of loss for three times that length at 10 Mhz. There's something else at work there. Jeff/KD4RBG -- Orig

Something looks pretty out of whack with those numbers. According to TLW, you'd need an SWR around 150:1 to get 6.5 db loss from 30 feet of RG-213 at 14 MHz. Dave AB7E _______________________________

Yep, mismatched line loss. Coax can be surprisingly awful when badly misterminated. I brought home a fresh roll of RG-6 from Home Depot and stuck a connector and a 1.5:1 unun on it just for kicks. S

You left out the most important part -- what bands does this antenna need to cover? I have two 80/40 fan dipoles at right angles to each other. One of them also has loading coils to allow it to load

Hi Chuck, At the minimum you would want to use a high power balun to interface the unballanced coax with the ballanced 450 ohm line. As to why type or impediance of balun, that would be determined by
