Al: Thanks for the reply. I took the liberty of attaching a short video of the winch after it failed; I sent it to your home address. It looks like the spring loaded latch (pawl) broke off completly.
All: After clearing the ice from the winch, I can now see that the pawl or spring-loaded latch is still there, but it looks like the crank shaft that the sprockets are attached to shifted to one side
Alan: Same here; the clutches come into play when the cable is letting out and they do make noise. There was a totally different noise when the winch failed. It was more like SNAP, SWISH, THUMP ; ).
All: I haven't been able to fully inspect the tower as I'd like with all the snow, but it looks ok so far. I don't see any obvious grinding or bending from the winch failure. I'll take a better look
