This is probably too obvious, but are any of the files that were put in the C:\F5U103 folder .EXE or .BAT files? If so, you probably have to run one to make W98 see the adapter and install the driver

They are VERY easy to build yourself... there are many designs available on the Internet, and FAR Circuits ( www.farcircuits.net ) sells a PC board with the 7805, 7417, and MAX232 chips for $US11.00.
