FWIW, I have used N6RK's method with the 4 foot aluminum mast.(photo link below) So far up to 55 feet total. Not sure I would try to go higher, or leave it up permanently without a good security fenc

I did this very thing Friday morning using a GPS enabled Android tablet with a free GPS compass application. The GPS app shows true north, so no corrections for magnetic north needed, and no problem
