Hi all, I am having my first problem with my AL-80B and I need some help in isolating the trouble, along with some signal tracing data that is not covered in the manual. Below is a synopsis of what i

This seems to be a very common occurrence in later Amperex tubes. The tube is at fault, not the amp- replace the tube and you'll likely get good service from the amp. 73, Scott, N9AA ________________

Rich, Hundreds of empirical observations from all makes of amplifiers must be wrong. Clearly, the problems must be the mysterious parasitic oscillation, which obviously is pushing the filament sidewa

I do not agree, Scott. New Amperex tubes typically have a gridfilament potential withstanding ability of > 8kV, and a short is not going to occur unless some anomaly pushes the filament sideways, cau

Mike, You are into a statistical thing. While some people like to pretend some sinister single event causes problems like this, the truth is tubes are very difficult to build. As a consequence there

Another way to test I've used, was to disconnect the +B lead, power on the amp and then measure the Grid-Filament isolation. In those three times tubes were blown, was any other event registered? (ex

The first place Id look is the output bandswitch contacts. Check continuity from the pi net side of the plate blocking cap to the Load cap. Since there are no input relays, very little goes wrong the

Several people have suggested checking the 40m tuned input circuitry. Are the input coils switched inline only when transmitting? When the amp is in standby the swr is OK. Sorry for the newbie questi
