I think the AL-1500 is a fine choice and a very good amplifier. BIG and a little bit noisy, but runs legal limit power easily and it's easy to tune. Use a lot of radials under the 18HT! And a big loa

*Hello Shon: The AL-1500 is a fine choice for the money. It will not do 6M however. It also has a 3 minute warm up time. I have an AL-1200 (no 6M) 5 second warm up time. and it has survived many seni

I'm not so sure. The grid trip circuit protecting the 8877's fragile grid is apt to drive a new op crazy. Why not an AL-1200 or even the 2X500Z amp? More to the point, Shon, it might make a lot more

Yeah, Pete is on the money. With 1500 Watts into that vertical, you will be heard wherever you want to be heard but sure as eggs, you are not gonna hear the other guys coming back to you. Put up the

I can offer a personal opinion: I think the most bang for the buck is probably the AL1200. It's a legal limit amp with one of the most rugged tubes on the market which is the most rugged tube in the

The AL-1200 has protective circuitry for over Grid current and you can add an over grid protective circuit option which I did but Mike from Ameritron said wasn't necessary. I get near 350MA during tu

The Ig will remain low and nothing will trip if during tuning you continue to increase LOADing as you tune. Watch the grid current, as it hits 300mA, turn the LOAD control more clockwise to bring it

The amp will run legal limit with <300mA Ig if you have a reasonable load connected. ARE YOU KIDDING? The AL-1500 will easily run 2KW+ with a grid current of less than 60ma The grid trip is set at 17

Yes, it will apparently do 2.5 kW. It's definitely a lot. My antenna, wire, antenna tuner, and other equipment is only rated at 1.5 kW. Even in an emergency, I imagine I would fry the rest of my stuf

amp, not the AL-1500 (8877). The AL-1200 runs higher Ig and doesn't have as much gain as the 1500. They'll both run >2 kW PEP output, but who's counting? :-P WB2WIK/6 _______________________________

What a great thread this has been. The net of it is that the 1500 & 1200 are good amps and worth the money. 73 Dave K3FT -- Dave K3FT _______________________________________________ Amps mailing list
