Here is a theory: the 3-500z in the AL80b suffered a flashover from the plate to the grid. I don't know the details of the AL80b circuit, but possibly the current surge resulted in a high voltage app

There is probably a small rf choke from the pi network output to ground. The rfc is there to short hv to ground if the plate blocking capacitor shorts. Worth looking at and a possible safety issue. P

While running a atu between txcr and amp is not recommended, in your case I would do this while testing to get Capacitive coupling DC isolation, protecting the txcr finals against a a DC threat. An o
