Why not just use an ALS500 from Ameritron? It should be fairly easy to retune to MARS. I would even suspect that it could be used without rework at all. My guess is there is no input band filtering,

Hi Chaz, Well, I think it is possible. It has been done, there are pleanty of good designs that are available. I sugest that you might read the ALS-500 manual, it says in the first paragraph that it

I would never use a ALS500M at home. It really is intended for applications where you only have 12 volts and aren't using a good station. I would get the ALS600 FET amplifier. It is much cleaner. By

actually, I ran this thread idea past one of our state MARS nets Tues and got several people wanting to be kept abreast of what I found out, etc. As I stated in the beginning message for this thread,

Yes, I agree, the ALS600 would be better, I'm not advocating for the 500, what I was really trying to get at was there are good and viable options already available. I was thinking the requirements w

If the request is to run from 110v and produce legal limit from 1.5 - 30 mhz, why not go tube and a switching power supply? That could be done and be rugged and light weight (probably not for $1/wat

Hi Chaz, Yea, you can buy a lot of inverter for $250, but you won't get far with it. I have a 3000 watt inverter in my boat, works great, runs the electric range top, micrawave, and my wifes' hairdry

Tom, the ALS500 is capable by virtue of size, weight, etc of being easily transportable from base to mobile to portable and back to base. the -600 is not Why would you not want the ALS500 sitting und

A bipolar transistor amp like that running at 12V is almost never as clean as a better exciter. It just can't be done unless you back the power way down. By the time you reduced power enough to not

The cost of $1 per watt is unobtainable in a good quality production amplifier. Remember it has to meet FCC requirements, and that means a good filter. About the only capacitor that will work is a m

actually, if we could just get this thing to work 3.2 to 28mhz, we would be in great shape. would that make it any easier?? to make a legal limit Solid state or tube amp? thanks chas k5dam __________

Hi Chas, Even removing the 160 meter requirement, it would make the ss easier, but still the $1/w unattainable in either ss or tube. Like Tom said, the filter board is really going to add up in price

I was thinking along similar lines, The AM3924, it's portable if you have an 18 wheeler ;) but i't one heck of a PA, two 4cx1500's in it, it can easily put out 3 KW++ if it had a better power supply.
