Greetings Amp'ers: Today I fulfilled a long time dream. I now own a real Alpha HF power amplifier. A ham within 1 hour driving time recently offered his Alpha 78 for sale at a price I could afford. W

Congrats on the Alpha 78. A word to the wise, keep the grid current under 50ma and run the amp very conservatively because the 8874's are very expensive to replace. My 78 (serial # 8271)puts out 1200

Are you saying that the plate choke isn't going to fail if the amp is loaded up on 24 MHz? Shouldn't one heed the warning given on the Alpha Radio Products web site which says: "The ALPHA PA-77, 77Dx

DO NOT use those Alpha Amps outlined at the bottom of this page on 24MHZ. I have seen first hand the damage it can do and have repaired damage from just that situation. 73s de John W4DJ _____________

Kenneth and others, I'm not for sure on this but I think Rich was refering to the SB-220 plate choke. I almost got it confused myself whether he was speaking of the Alpha or the Heath. One can test t

I strongly agree, John. I measured the choke impedance of the Alpha 78 with the choke installed in the amplifier and it definitely has a series resonance around 25 MHz. Load up on 12 meters at your o

Absolutely WRONG!!!! The Alpha amplifiers in the 76, 78, 374, etc series were intentionally designed with a choke resonance around 25 MHz to prevent their use on 27 MHz. This information comes direct

I don't have an Alpha, but it would seem to be feasible to construct a replacement plate choke with a series resonance above 30 MHz, permitting use of the amplifier on 12 (and hopefully 10) meters. O
