To fairly evaluate radio costs, I took my purchase price new of a Drake TR-3 and used Google to get that money converted into 2015 money. The TR-3 would cost about $13,000 USD in today's money. Actua

No argument there, but most of us couldn't afford a $13,000 radio today. Luxuries, including ham radio equipment, have gotten cheaper in real (non-inflationary) dollars since the 1950s and 1960s. But

Yes, but usually the "way that is found" is to get on the air with cheaper gear. Hence the proliferation of Ameritron equipment, used SB-200s, etc.  I've never heard of a ham getting a second job to

I agree with that. The problem is a lot of guys get into a HB project specifically out of a thought that 1) HB will be cheap and 2) how hard can it be. A lot more money than they expected, and a lot

You can get a very nice Henry floor console amp with two working 3-500z tubes for about $1000. A new pair of 3-500zg tubes is $400 with a three year warrantee. If a Henry has the export/commercial po

OK, then the Henry was the wrong example to make my point. I don't think I've ever seen one at a hamfest, and as far as I know none of the local hams use one. They run Ameritron, Dentron, or Kenwood.

My converted SB220 for 6 meters has more power output than it ever did in the stock configuration with the same tubes, 1300/1400 watts if pushed. I don't run it there, typically use it at 1KW output.
