I don't know where this practice came from -- perhaps the guys who came up with "Please Copy?" Both are time-wasters, and "test" at the end of a CQ completely throws off the rhythm of answering a CQ.
... "test" at the end of a CQ completely throws off the rhythm of answering a CQ. If you need that "test" to tell you it's time to call, you need to go back to contesting school! Please explain the p

A complete waste of time? Or shorthand to notify other ops that you are in the contest, since (hard as it might be to believe) not everyone QRV is operating in the contest? Sending CQ TEST is faster
A CW contest without the traditional "test" sound would be pretty boring for me. I listen for it when scanning for search and pounce. Many stations use both "cq" and "test", which is a bit busy. I ju

I think the practice came about as a way to distinguish between a guy calling CQ and a guy calling another station. If I tune across and hear "%^&*%(@%$ K9YC" it's not clear what K9YC was intending.
So when you are S&P and you tune across someone in time to hear them send their call sign one time do you call them or not? If not, and they actually called CQ, do you wait for them to work whoever d
If I hear just the call, no, no, I will not answer, because my mind first response will be: "is this guy trying do work somebody that I can't listen?". If I hear the call with TEST, I will answer him
oh.. I figured that the "test" at the end of the call was his call SIGN.. we are always supposed to end a transmission with our own call, right? Funny they didn't answer test de wc7s tho... LOL.. Ser
There must be a convention (that's the nice thing about standards...there are so many of them). I've always used "Test Mycall" in my CQ message. If I'm in a contest with a short 2-letter abbreviation
I don't see this as a S&P time saver - if you tune across someone and catch the last seconds of their transmission and only hear "TEST", you still have to wait again to copy their callsign. John KK9A
My guess is that Jim is referring to someone that sends CQ TEST (or CQ WPX) - their callsign and then TEST again at the end. You can tell that they are in the contest by the CQ TEST. John KK9A Ron No
I usually operate assisted, and agree with Jim - most times if I have seen someone spotted and hear just the last letter or two of his call, I figure he's running there and call immediately. Adding
It's not in the same category as please copy (and yes, I have heard that on cw too : )), but at least for me having TEST first is better. When tuning the band you often come across a "CQ", "TU", or "
Respectively disagree. For starters, the ARRL operating manual presents "test" as a legitimate option at the end of a CW contest CQ. Other variations include (1)ending a CQ with the abbreviated name
I used to be a RM2D TEST guy, and did so because it was the habit of the past. Why? Simply becuse it has reduced the amount of stations, who by mistake start calling while the word TEST is still bein

I have to agree with K9YC on this one, but with qualifications. Contesting is about making great use of your time, doing things as efficiently as possible. Most of the folks I heard doing this were s
For at least 10 years, my N1MM keys have been F1 TEST K9YC Minimal CQ F3 TU K9YC (to end a running QSO, hit ESC after TU when I know callers are waiting) F8 CQ TEST K9YC (Feed the Skimmers) F9 CQ TES
Contesters come in all varieties and abilities. One size does not fit all. It behooves us as contesters to be flexible and adapt to what other operators are doing so long as they are not breaking any
While we're talking about minutia, sometimes I accidentally hit F1 twice and the computer sends TEST WC1M WC1M TEST before I can hit ESC to stop the 2nd CQ. I hope the time inspectors won't get on my
