I can't imagine trying to run RTTY without the speaker. First you can't tell if a frequency is truly clear without listening. Second you still have to hear them to get them on the screen to tune them

I have found it to be useful to listen to the rtty. You can often diagnose someone off frequency or inverted faster by ear than the display. And you can coarse tune quicker than by watching the scope
