They were not all done that way. Here on the west coast, the RX stations are all right on the coast (aimed SW, W, and NW), while the TX stations were either displaced up/down the coast 20 miles or so
I may or may not have posted it here, but I used to track dirt-bikes on 10m and 6m with a Yagi. They were in the hills about seven miles away and I could follow the sound of their ignition. Kurt ___
