On 40 meter onSaturday I heard some of the worst sounding RTTY signals I have ever heard. Very distorted from several stations that surprised me. It was like they were running AFSK with way too much

At my latitude, 42N, this distortion on 40m is very common, from nightfall until about midnight when it tends to clear up. The signals sound terrible but the decoders, MMTTY(narrow), MMTTY(wide) and
