I heard a local during the contest on phone who had a delay after his CQ machine finished the CQ. He would often miss the first letter of the callsign. PTT control of the radio is the ONLY way to go

PTT is definitely the way to go, Tree. Why didn't you implement it via the radio serial interface? It might not handle all situations, but it would save some TR users from having to wire up the inter

I am not sure all radios have PTT available via the serial port. Also, using the serial interface wouldn't be responsive enough. Some of the radios require 50 ms or longer to send a command to. This
