I am considering simplifying my shack a little. I have an SB-200 currently not in use and was thinking of trying to drive it with my Argonaut for those times when I need the power (Air Force MARS). D

Bob You should be abl to drive the SB200 to aout 300-500 watts with 20 watts drive. The problem is that the V doesn't have an AL output. Ron K3MIYC I am considering simplifying my shack a little. I h

The problem is that the V doesn't have an AL output. Neither does the Orion. And you'll need a RF sensing switch to put the amp into transmit mode. k4ia Craig "Buck" Fredericksburg, Virginia USA ____

Thank you Craig and the others for responding. So the RF sensing switch takes the place of a keying control output that apparently does not exist in the Argo V? Is that what the AL output is? Have ne

Most amps have two jacks on the back besides RF input and output: a relay jack to control B+ voltage and T/R switching, that is normally controlled from the exciter (transceiver), and an ALC output j

Bob The ALC biases the RF to avoid clipping. In an amplifier, the exciter ALC is applied as a bias to avoid the same thing. The Argo does not provide ALC to an amp. If the amp can create an internal

I have an idle SB-200 here so I ran some tests to see what 20 watts drive would do. Found several interesting and maybe discouraging things. Forget about ALC. 20 watts will not drive the amp to anywh

The rules I downloaded in August still require 50 watts drive. And some were pure class C planning on the AM carrier for any bias towards linearity. Most were severe splatter and harmonic creators. W

I think you might find better efficiency if the amplifier was tuned with normal drive levels and those tuning capacitor positions were used for the low drive condition. At least for the loading. As f

I thought of doing that but the question was how the SB-200 would work with the Argonaut V. Since it has only 20 watts max available, one cannot tune with any higher drive level. Before I put the amp
