I'm a little late coming to this subject, but QST ran a fix in its "Hints and Kinks" for the AGC "pop" problem back in 1982 or l983. Someone may have more info on this. 73, John, W3ULS ______________

The fundamental cause of thump in analogue Tentec radios is that the AGC is derived from audio sometimes after some audio filtration. In any case the audio wave rises more slowly than the IF wave and

I think I have that mod in my old files somewhere ... I believe it is a change to the time constant / attack time of the audio AGC (by changing a cap and resistor as I recall). I did this and did NOT

That's what I was starting to think, it was to do with the speed at which the audio derived AGC could respond. Lately, as I play on 80m, I've been wondering what I could do, perhaps disable AGC and c

Backing off on the RF gain (not the IF gain) can minimize the excess signal power stored in the filter to make the thump. At least that works in my Corsair II. You need to keep enough gain to handle

Unfortunately, there is no RF Gain control on the Argosy receivers. BUT... there is a classic article by Cornell Drentea, WB3JAO (now KW7CD), "Upgrading the Ten-Tec Argosy" from Ham Radio, Nov 1986

Yes, the audio 'thump' is caused by the audio AGC being derived from the audio waveform rather than the IF itself. However there are numerous benefits to this scheme including the fact that the audio

Interesting, hadn't thought of that. Too bad the Argosy lacks an RF gain. One step at a time. Shawn Upton, KB1CKT __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yah

I had a protracted exchange with a fellow whose Argosy was bothered by broadcast band transmissions. His trouble may have been from the standard AM broadcast band. He resolved the trouble by adding a

I think the mods I have seen for the Argosy provide for the addition of a variable i.f. gain gain control. Wouldn't a switchable -10dB or -20db attenuator at or near the front end of the Argosy provi

Sure an attenuator will work. It isn't as conveniently variable, but with the typical TenTec provisions for a separate receive antenna, and external antenna relay could allow the relay to be outside
