If ur friend wears an hearing aid, have him purchase a "loop-set" that hangs around his neck. The connector is a stereo mini-plug. Switch the hearing-aid to telephone pick-up and it'll sound like ssb

You do NOT want to shift the pitch, you DO want to adjust the frequency response to emphasize the highs and de-emphasize the lows. An IF shift can do this to some extent and may be enough in some rec
