Uggh! For any type of quality RF connector (this does NOT include "UHF" PL-255/SO-239 connectors) with knurled shells, additional tightening beyond finger tight does not help to make a better connec

I always change the PL259 out to type N.  PL259 is not a 50 ohm connector and leaves an impedance bump on the line.  That connector became the default connector after WWII but is somewhere around 93

Another thing to watch for is that the teeth of the PL259 and SO239 are meshed properly and not sit on top of each other. One little bump and you have a loose connection. Tony VE3DWI Sent wirelessly

Guys, If you stop and think about it, less than 1/10th of a turn beyond 'finger tight' is precious little. It is, however, enough to make a difference. My experience has been, if I go 'just a smidge'

In use of PL 259 UHF connectors, you would be hard put to see any real detriment at HF bands, per measurements with Antenna Analyzers on the impedance. However, a key step overlooked by hams is to fi

I agree. Just a "smidge," especially if they get any lateral stress or wiggling over time. As a new ham, I encountered some problems I could not resolve, including poor tuner performance, transceiver

It would be interesting to know if the 259 connector problems are from any particular manufacture/s. which leads me to ask: are the imports as good as the domestic 259's? My experience tell's me, No.

I do not think the quality differs on the basis of domestic vs foreign manufacture. Some vendors, like RF Parts, DX-Engineering, Array Solutions, and (usually) the main ham radio gear vendors, like H

I think a more important point, than which connector or which manufacturer, or how tight, is the weather-proofing. How many times have we built a "temporary" antenna, and then left it up for 10 years

You can easily carry a good UHF receptacle to a ham fest and test the offerings of PL 259 plugs for good fit before buying. That is, if the stock is open bins. Stuart Rohre K5KVH ____________________

The Amphenol 83-886 is also a viable candidate as are the connectors from RF Industries, sold through Tessco. There's definitely a lot of junk PL-259s out there, and that includes the gold-plated typ

Agreed. Mouser's break point in pricing is at qty 25. I just got another batch of them last week. For just over $3 each, it's foolish to try to 'save' money on anything else. Dave WA3F -- Original Me
