I changed the subject, since there have been several postings since "the last word." We could feel the impact of the Internet as far as attracting vendors to our convention in 2001 - that long ago. O

Jim, what you noticed is exactly what smart companies are doing. Instead of going to expensive hamfests, they are advertising in media which specifically cater to potential users of the products they

While a good strategy, Rick, visiting the vendor area is one of the first things I do at a hamfest or convention. I like to see whatever products are on display, even if they aren't the latest and gr

The problem with that approach is that many (most?) hams want to SEE and TOUCH a radio before spending a big chunk of our hard earned savings on it. If the manufacturer does not sell through dealers

Yes Jim, but MOST HAMS don't go to the Hamfest that the dealers do. If they go at all, it is usually to local events. Perhaps 20,000 out of 700,000 US hams go to Dayton. 3% of the potential customers

That assumes that the only measure of hamfest "success" is orders written in the booth. Many folks like to ponder their purchase for a while, and most of us have to save up for a while. 73, Jim K9YC

I've had a ticket since 1976 and this year will be my first time at Dayton! I am pumpedfor the event and plan on enjoying all of the displays from vendors even if they are scalled back to a degree. 7

Not 100% accurate, but I would think that a spike in orders following a hamfest or convention might be an indicator of success. Of course, that could be only a small blip in the bigger picture. Not t

I haven't read every post in this thread, but I might mention that one not-so-minor consideration these days is the sales tax you have to pay on a purchase at a hamfest. Tax on a $3000 rig will be at

We felt our UK business was not what it should be, so for the past two years, I shipped a pallet of hardware to England for the "National Hamfest" in Lincoln. It's the country's largest Hamfest. I ha

Or course, you can lose customers at a Hamfest, as well as make them. A couple of years ago, I drove the 350 miles (one way) to Dayton, just to buy a particular auto tuner. The engineer (no longer wi

Yes, but you may still owe USE TAX to your home state on purchases made over the Internet and through mail order houses. You really don't escape the tax, entirely. It can exceed the sales tax, depend
