Omni directional mics are far less expensive to build and work adequately. And probably less sensitive to changing frequency response from the mouth to microphone spacing changing. -- 73, Jerry, K0CQ

Is it fair to suggest that the mic element is omni but because of the way it is mounted - in a case with an opening on one side and with sound absorbing material behind it - that it effectively funct

They can be OK if used at very close spacing to the intended sound source; the reduced gain needed at the rig input can help reduce reflections, blower noise and unwanted vox action. This is workable

The mounting will mask high frequencies from the rear, giving it a degree of apparent directivity. The term uni-directional isn't really valid in a microphone context. A cardioid results from the sup

A true unidirectional microphone takes a lot of acoustics to get a decent front to back and front to side that involves getting acoustic pressure to the back of the diaphragm to counteract that which
