There's this mythical idea hams seem to have, that decent AM can only happen with a big plate modulated tube rig. I have no idea where this comes from, given the fact that broadcasters are ditching

I owned a dx100 and several of its hundred pound cousins. Other than selling them on ebay for big $ I can't think of any reason to have them back including am. Same goes for the hallis and nationals.

Rob, Today AM is a mode of nostalgia, plain and simple. Breaking into a real AM QSO with a Flex radio or some screen modulated rig is like entering a 'Sissy boy' in a bull riding championship. If you

It is mythical. While a big transmitter will keep your room warmer in the winter and give you more exercise when you move it around, low power DSP generated AM or AM from something as pedestrian as

You are so right! How about Hall. HT37 or HT32....?? In my AM/CW days I never really had a heavy rig. I had a Hall. HT40 Xmtr and Lafayette Receiver. My main stay station was a Gonset G66B receiver a

Rob, if what you said were true no new vacuum tube equipment would be sold but it is. The audio purest will tell you solid state comes close but tubes are still the best. As for AM rigs one reason I

My buddy 10 miles down the road is a certified packrat. He has all my old boatanchors and if/when we can actually get into the room where he has them, I get to see them from time to time. Also in the

You're right...plate modulation in broadcasting died many years ago in favor of PDM and some esoteric new digital methods that work by actually constructing the final RF wave form by turning on an ap

NO! NEVER! The overall efficiency of the high level plate modulated rig is better than any linear so there's less heat in the room for the same power output. It takes lots of modifications to the DX-

Well, I heartily disagree. You're forgetting all of the other stuff, modulators, audio drivers, RF drivers, whatever. The Class C finals, are not the only thing generating a bit of heat. That was th

When I said I'd want a big tube transmitter, it is not because I believe the myth that this is the only way to get good AM. I don't doubt at all that modern solid state transmitters using digital or
