1. [TenTec] Orion gain setting (score: 1)

I'd probably never set it above 75. If you can hear band noise in the background, it's plenty high. Here's a 60-second method to gain adjustment: 1. turn RF Gain to 100 and tune in an s9+ station. 2.

Just leave threshold at 1uV, always, and just lower RF Gain. Threshold is automatically set internally when you adjust RF Gain. Barry N1EU _______________________________________________ TenTec maili

The reason for the high threshold is this to establish a base of a S9 signal. Signals over S9 will trigger AGC while those below will not. I stated this was for casual operation, with good conditions

Scott et All, One great advantage in the ORION is you can tweak every different AGC setting, not just the "Prog". So whatever your choice of operating, you can match it in the settings at will. My ex

This thread is very illuminating. I've had my O2 for five years now and still feel as if I'm using about 10% of its capabilities. I generally just turn it on, work some CW, and turn it off -- a littl

Well said, John. That was the point I was trying to make. There is no single setting, and each AGC setting can be tweaked to the operators preference. The "Prog" setting is great for an additional fa

Set AF Gain for the maximum volume you want your ears to experience (with RF Gain temporarily set at maximum), NOT at the maximum setting of the AF Gain control itself. Barry N1EU ___________________

Right on Scott. Not only that, but this thread seems to be confusing the 565 and the 566. They're similar, but not identical as to settings. 73 Ray W2RS ______________________________________________

Good point, Ray. I was refering to the 566. I had a 565 when they first came out, but I don't remember much about the AGC in it. 73 Scott --Original Message-- ________________________________________

I have a 566 (2.044a), and find myself using different settings on different bands. I'm mostly a CW DXer, and do very little SSB, so I can see how the settings for casual SSB operating would be diffe

Since we are on the AGC topic I'll ask a question. In days of yore when tubes were king, there were several types of AGC, with only a few having an AGC anywhere nearly as sophisticated as the Orion.

To get to the Prog setting I gave previously for my 566, I disconnected the antenna and shorted out the antenna connector. I then increased the AGC threshold until the S meter read S9. This was 38.30

It's possible that running RF Gain at 100 may override your threshold setting. The TT Engineers would know for sure. Barry N1EU _______________________________________________ TenTec mailing list Ten
