Hold the pwr button in for 5 seconds and see what happens. My S meter slams to the right, receiver quits and I hear a machine gun like sound. Hit the cw key and sometimes it locks up in transmit mode

Ah, that's it. Had to go back and look at my emails to ditsnbits. I found this myself some time ago. I was told by Gary that this is a factory diagnostic/alignment mode, not documented in the manual.
