GE, I have a new matched pair of 3-500Z tubes that I am going to install in my TT Centurion. Was wondering if it is necessary to run the tubes (filaments only) for a while with no HV. If so for how l

If they haven't been turned on the in the last month or so, let them run for an hour or so per month of storage time. The tubes should have a date code on them, that might give you an idea of how lon

Doyle, I've seen two, exactly opposite, views on this. One view says yes, run them. The heat from the filaments is supposed to activate the getter materials and absorb any stray gas. Thus preventing

I discussion I saw said that the older, Eimac 3-500Z had zirconium in the anode and that when it was heated to at least a dull red, the zirconium becomes a getter. I don't know about newer tubes, or

When I got my 3-500ZG matched pair replacements for my Centurion, they came with instructions to run the tubes for an hour (or two?) just with the filaments running before using them. I did, and they

The getter is active, its deposited on the inside of the glass. If there are air molecules heating them with the filament causes some circulation within the tube and eventually they wander by the get

Duane, How did you accomplish that ? Did you have the means to shut off the high voltage ? Did you disconnect wires ? Did you run them in a test fixture that had only filament power (and a fan) ? 73

Hmm, now that you ask, Gary, I'm not sure . . . I guess it wasn't with the B+ turned off, but just idling. You know, the memory is a tricky thing . . . :-) At least, I don't remember running filament

There's a good web page (among many) on getter material at http://www.thevalvepage.com/valvetek/getter/getter.htm The 3-500Z does use zirconium as a getter, and zirconium needs to be at about 1000 C

This can be a problem with amplifiers that have a single transformer with secondaries for the HV, filament and control systems voltages. I would feel uncomfortable running it for a few hours, with n
