Scott.. When you mentioned the "mean old cigar-smoking FCC examiner".. I had to recall taking a test in NY city at 641 Washington St... The examiners name was Nelson Finklemann, he presented a "mean"

The last of the full-time FCC examiners was Joe Welsh at the Philadelphia office. SK for many years now, but Joe was as nice and friendly a guy as you'd care to meet. He was an active ham - I forget
