These are not as good today as their reputation was 40 years ago. The reason is, we've got more bands to match today, and our transceivers demand darn near 50 Ohms. The models were 275w and 1KW. I ha

The best tuners I know of are the Ten Tec 229/238 (essentially the same tuners, different appearance to match different vintages of Omni rigs). Yes, it uses a balun to couple to balanced line. So wha

If you want balanced only, the Palstar BT1500A works great for me. Yes, there is a balun, but it's at the input where it belongs. Yep, they're expensive. $400 to $500 used, but very solid units Dave

There is much contention or discussion about baluns where the voltage balun forces balance to local earth, and the current balun lets the antenna and feed line pick the balance point. So far since I

I only remember the stuff that melted when overworked. Or soldered too close to. One can't expect to work a plastic supported coil at incandescent wire temperatures and have the wires stay in place t

I don't recall significant differences between Airdux and B&W other than the color of the box. I still have some of both. And they were made by melting a hot wire into the plastic, most likely NOT ny

My first "Johnson Matchbox" was not made by E.F. Johnson, it was made by G. N. Johnson, that is ME. It will match most anything from a short to an open and I've used it to test twinlead that way. Wer

It is indeed polystyrene by both B&W and Airdux. Back back in the days when electronic distributors had outside salesman, I worked for Hughes-Peters in Cincinnati. We sold both lines. Dave Heil K8MN

It only takes one basement flood to put the corrosion in and one try with a 600 watt amp to melt the coil. or running with no antenna connected and 100 watts is probably enough to melt the coil. They

Well guys, Jerry probably touched on the most important factor here. The doggone manufacturers somehow assumed we wanted everything smaller and smaller and so they compromised performance for size. I

In Germany that coil tubing was probably 6 or 8 mm diameter. Practically 1/4 or 5/16" diameter. I just checked a couple banana plugs and jacks. I get 0.145" as the smallest rigid diameter of the plug

OK, then you nailed it. It must have been 4mm. It was a tight fit and very robust. I once built a linear amp using this technique. If I were to describe it in detail, you guys would all laugh at me.
