I'm "hoping" to use a Marine Band Base Antenna on the 2 Meter band and was wondering IF there would be any advantage to putting a 1:1 balun at the feed point of the antenna? Just thinking out loud ab

Erase the word "balun" from your vocabulary -- it is vague, used to describe at least a half dozen different things, and is thus very confusing. What you DO want is a common mode choke on the coax at

I have used a mast head mounted shunt fed 1/2 wave marine band antenna (Metz) on our sailboat interchangeably (1X2 coax switch) between my 2M and marine band VHF rigs. At a height of 50 ft or so it w

There are many unknown variables that woul d affect the answer. Generally, the dimensions of a 2 m antenna are about 12% larger than a marine antenna, so right off the bat, you're going to have a hig

As N6BT has long observed, everything "works," even a light bulb as an antenna. A primary purpose of a common mode choke on a feedline is to minimize the coupling of noise from the feedline to the an

Seeing as how I have no real "need" for the marine band, I guess I will just put up the correct antenna for 2 Meters and not try to "cheap out"! Thanks to all Tom W1ALZ Hope I don't sound foolish!!!!

I'm aware of all the things you mention and more. I think the light bulb comment is unwarranted. You will note although my info is anecdotal it nevertheless represents over 20 years of hands on exper

I'm sorry if you're offended -- none was intended. But most of us who have heard Tom speak on the topic have found the story a clever way of observing that some things work better than others. I have

Absolutely no offense taken. I read with interest and appreciate your contributions to the technical issues on this site. I am just standing up for a solution that was good enough and proven to be so

Engineers and proficient technical people live in a world of measurement, optimization, and facts. Lots of things "work." Someone may use an antenna with an unmatched 3:1 swr and get to the DXCC Hono

This paragraph reflects the way that I'll more then likely go: "If you really want to work 2m optimally, an antenna made for a frequency 12% away isn't the right choice, unless it is vastly less hass
