Dick, I sort of suspect the relay box is the problem. I have seen 'lazy' relays in non radio applications do exactly what you are describing, that is, poor continuity until hit with a current load. I

Hi Dick, It sounds like poor element connections to me. Taking the elements apart and cleaning the joints up and then re-assemble with a new layer of NoOx should fix it. Spring project I wud think. J
