I have the hole dug for my new 18HT tower but still a few more questions: 1. The base consists of three 1.75 in by 0.25 in thick aluminum "base tubes" with long bolts on the bottom which is pushed in
Allen, I have no personal experience with attaching aluminum structure to concrete. However, Universal tower states that this is a problem. See the following link: http://www.universaltowers.com/I-B.
3. I have been told that the PVC insulators which are at the top of the top tower section should be replaced with Teflon due to high voltage at that point while using the antenna on 160 meters with
Right, Universal aluminum towers use a galvanized steel concrete base (I have one). Chris KF7P _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ TowerTal
I removed the short aluminum tubes and replaced with longer (I think inch36 inch) steel ones. In anticipation of running high power I replaced the shelves at the top of the tower section with replace

The Hy-Gain Hy-Tower (AKA can work 160 with the base loading coil but it is not my preferred method. If you have room for the "horizontal" run, Hy-Gain has a kit to add 160 meters in a way I like bet

Another way to add 160 to the Hytower is use one of the mobile antenna coils from Hi-Q or similar. You then have a remotely tunable antenna for 160 and 80, with out having to change taps. Skip, KJ6Y
Could a Heathkit SA-2550 also be used to tune 160 on a Hy-Gain Hy-tower Av18ht?? Link for an sa-2550 is here: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/9417 Gary J N5BAA Another way to add 160 to the Hytowe
Hi Allen, You do not want concrete in contact with aluminum! It will eat up the aluminum. Even aluminum windows come with a warning to not let the brick mortar come in contact with the aluminum frame

I have had my 18HT up for 30 years with aluminum tubes in the concrete. I see no signs of deterioration. That's good enough for me. Lee, w0vt Yes indeed.. Aluminum is readily attacked by most acids a
It's hard to tell from the Hy-Gain owner's manual or parts list, but... Are they really selling aluminum base tubes to embed in concrete? I'll take the OP at his word, but given what we know about al

Sorry, I don't get it. If it is a srewdriver thingy then I like the inverted "L" better with no moving parts and automatic band switching, no need to fiddle with tuning. ...but, I am open to somethin

Yeah, I had the requisite year of freshman chemistry too but lets get real. Hy-Gain has been making these antennas for how long? They have been putting aluminum into concrete for how long? Anyone eve
I've had an 18HT for 40 years. It's been in two locations. The last one for 30 years. The base fits into three thick walled aluminum pipes sunk into concrete. It's never failed and it's as strong as
You should have taken the physics course too. :>) The old "bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly" is an old wives tale that has been around for ages. 73 Gary K4FMX _____________________________________

Gary, You misunderstand my meaning. Another try... Hy-Gain has sold Hy-Towers since the 50's and I know of no failures due to corrosion of those tubes. Has there been one? Anyway, those telling us of
