I have a G5RV type homebrew dipole that has been up for the past 11 years and I am now planning on doing some maintainance and replacing the coax and balun on it, and cleaning and redoing all connect

John, In what I would call the "classic" version of the G5RV the ladderline section needs to be an electrical half-wave on 20m - that usually works out at just over 30ft, not the 20ft you are using.

Alternately, you can make these out of "monster" speaker cable or 12 gauge low voltage sprinkler zip cord, both available at Home Depot, et al. Rick _______________________________________________ __

One advantage of THHN is that the insulation is rated for 650 volts RMS. That yields 1300V between conductors, so the choke will tolerate significant SWR. A second advantage is cost -- THHN is really

And, THHN is good to 90C. I don't know what the speaker wire is good to. I note that some SPT-2 zipcord is rated to 105C (others are rated to 60C... gotta read the specsheet or markings) ____________

I used Teflon coated #14 gauge silver wire to wind a 160-20m 4:1 2Kw balun on three cores. The thing has been working great for over 20yrs with legal limit feeding 450ohm ladder line to 160m dipole.

I meant to say "low voltage lighting" zip cord. It has very thick insulation. Although meant to operate at 12V, it should be good for many 100's of volts. HD sells a generic version of the famous nam

Be aware that if you're tempted to use the G5RV on a band where the VSWR(50) is high, the 1:1 balun windings may need to withstand some quite high voltages. For example, on 30m at 1400W the voltage b

Here are a couple of simple calculations based on EZNEC predictions of the impedance at the end of the G5RV ladderline - where the 1:1 balun operates: 40m: Z = 27-j78 At the 1500W level, I = 7.5A rms

Apologies - I don't avidly read US band plans and power limits ;) So, try 1500W on 10m instead: peak voltage = 2.88kV 73, Steve G3TXQ _______________________________________________ _________________

I think our power limits are way better than yours in the UK (400 watts). We only have 200 watts on 30 meters though, except when working VP8ORK and then it appears many can run at least 1500 watts ;
