Would someone please explain how brake winches work? I want to use one as a tilt winch on a 40 Rohn 25G tower. The tower is bracketed to my chimney and the tilt load obviously drops to nil as the tow

The common brake winch has a wheel / drum attached to the high gear shaft. it positioned out side the main frame. there is a lever with a steel band that encompasses that wheel drum. and when lowerin

There is more than one type of winch brake. Worm drives above a certain reduction ratio won't "motor" or allow the load to turn the winch. There are no brake parts as such but you get full control an

On my Dutton-Lainson B1200 brake winch, if you are below minimum load, the handle actually unscrews and comes off in your hand. Since this is obviously not a good thing to do, just apply a little tug

I use a BB Brothers 30:1 worm drive winch (Now Wintech W200-5) to tilt over 80' of Rohn 45. The wire rope goes through a pulley on the 40' end of the Rohn 45 falling derrick and back down to the winc

That's not correct! It's the gear ratio! Not friction that makes the worm gear winch self braking! I can raise my LM470 tower to vertical with one hand using my Dayton worm gear winch. With the doubl

Having used winches and worm gear/worm gear wheels in industry, and in ham radio for over 50 years I can only go by experience which shows far less effort to raise a given load using a good worm gear

As my on-order-but- not-delivered-yet new Tashjian tower has 2 each 1/2 HP motors, one for extend and power retract and the other for tilt, I don't worry too much about manual cranking. I don't recal

The typical powered extensions and tilts supplied with towers that I've seen, use multiple belt and pulley speed reductions so the typical 1700 RPM motor is lightly loaded with temperature not a prob

Sorry Roger, the bit about cooling fans and cooling coils was an attempt at tongue in cheek humor in response to the earlier concern for heating that was mentioned. Next time I will put a few ;) ;) ;
